How to make school education multi-dimensional

The education system we have today is pretty one dimensional. It is heavily focused on teaching a lot of facts, and children learning those facts, and children passing tests. A multi-dimensional approach covers more than that, as well as studying concepts and learning key facts, it would include a more hands-on approach as well as a focus on things like kindness, ethics and tolerance. Steps have been made to move to this in some ways but for there to be real change, a complete overhaul has to happen. But parents should know that while that not be something they have direct control over, there are ways of achieving this from home with things like online learning opportunities.

What our school system should look like

Creating a multi-dimensional system of education includes things of the mind, the heart and the hand. Right now too much of the mind is the focus. Learning science, technology, literature, mathematics, history and such. But if we want better people in society it would make sense to include more work and experiences with ethics, tolerance, kindness, charity, resilience and such. That would be the heart. Then the hand refers to having more hands-on learning and skills that can help children be more productive and capable outside school. Learning problems solving, practical skills as well as hands-on creativity in the form of things like art.

How to achieve change

Right now there is a lot of focus for schools on grades, exam passes, performance tables and so on. Teachers are less focused on setting new and evolved science projects for class 9 because there are so many goals they have to meet. For a multi-dimensional education to happen within schools there needs to a big change in how they are run, from the timetable, curriculum planning and how teachers teach to what the focus should be on the real value of education.
  1. The curriculum should connect to the real world, and offer real-life problems and experiences for students to learn through to develop skills such as craftsmanship, professionalism, problem-solving, leadership, determination, and more.
  2. Students should be less forced into compliance and encourage and believed in, that they have real value.
  3. There should be more collaboration, and rather than teachers being watched and judged, there should be a chance of peer feedback that is supportive.
  4. As well as a strong focus on writing and reading there should be more time given to speaking. It is something that is often required across industries in various workplaces, and yet students leave school lacking the confidence and skills to offer critique and express ideas.
  5. There should be a stronger emphasis on character building, the well-being of children, physically, emotionally and mentally, and offering them experiences and activities that help shape them.
  6. Assessments should be on the child's growth overall not just on how they managed to perform in a one or two-hour exam.
Using online learning in the meantime

Until changes are made to achieve this kind of multi-dimensional approach to learning, parents are faced with picking up the slack. If you are looking for more innovative options for modules on science projects for class 9, or want them to pick up some practical skills, consider looking at online learning options. There are free platforms that have a lot of great classes or modules so they can achieve a better and more rounded education.
