What to Wear to Gymnastics Class
When kids are getting ready for their first of gym class one of the things they and their parents need to think about is the gear they need. There are several options, leotards, gymnastics leotards with shorts, unitards and more. Here is a closer exploration of what the options are, how they are different, and more useful tips.
Types of common gymnastic clothing
For girls, most gymnastic coaches expect a form of leotard or unitard. Unitards are like gymnastics leotards with shorts. A gym leotard can have long sleeves, short sleeves or no sleeves and is cut below the hips. As there are various types of leotards you can find, it is important to get one specifically designed for gymnasts, they are cut properly and are tight where they need to be. A dance leotard, for example, is going to ride up when you do gymnastics in them make you uncomfortable and put you off what you are meant to be doing. You can also get gymnastic shorts if they are not comfortable in leotards but check with the coach as not all of them allow them. These are tight-fitting shorts they wear over a leotard like bike shorts.
Underwear yes or no?
Often people ask about the use of underwear. It depends on what they are wearing to class. If they are wearing gymnastic leotards then there is no need for underwear, they are very much like a swimming costume. Sometimes when girls hit their teens they get uncomfortable with some things and wearing underwear makes them feel better. That is completely fine. There is actually skin-coloured underwear you could buy for them so that the fact they are wearing underwear is not obvious. Just be sure to get underwear that has the same cut the leotards have. If they are developing their breasts and prefer to wear a bra too for better support that is also fine. Just make sure it is not visible and the straps do not show.
Other things to bring to class
As well as leotard or girls gymnastic shorts, they will need a soft band for their hair if it's long to keep it up and out of their face. They should not wear tights, socks or such on their feet as that can cause accidents. They should also bring a bag with a change of clothes, water and possibly a light snack. Also, add in any medications for example if they need an inhaler.
Why pre-teens and teens prefer girls gymnastic shorts
As they hit this age they become more aware of their bodies and can feel self-conscious as leotards are quite revealing. That is why at this point it becomes more common to see gymnasts in shorts. There are some advantages to them, they are short, attractive, less revealing and still allow them to have all the range of movement they need. Being tight still, they do not get caught on equipment or pose a safety problem. Check with the class teacher or coach though. Some do not encourage just because they cannot wear them in competition and sometimes can get twisted up. It will depend on the gymnast and the class they are attending.
