Why Team Building is not just Passing Fad

There are a lot of terms that get thrown around across various industries and one you hear quite often is team building. While some phrases or ideas for a better working environment come and go, team building is not a fad and is something to take seriously and respond appropriately to. Too often a business owner or leader will consider team building, have something organized and carried out, and not put any thought into what is done, and what they want to achieve with it. Team building does not have to be a tough weekend away where people resent giving up a weekend for work. There are all kinds of options, including even online team building. With proper thought and consideration, a lot can be accomplished with good team-building choices.

Not a band-aid for dysfunction

It is important to understand that one team-building exercise or event is not going to fix every problem your employees are having and suddenly create a perfect team. There are also some issues that need more attention than just a team-building activity. For example,
  • Very low morale – A team that is not working well together because of low morale is not going to be completely effective. That is because team building is not a fix for the problem that is causing low morale. If you have a department or whole business with this issue you need to get to the root of the problem. A day off or an afternoon of exercises is not a solution for that.
  • Fixing a break in communication – While team building can show the employees that good communication is a great part of an effective team, one activity a year is not going to solve that. As with morale, it needs in-house investigation and careful planning to make improvements at every step on the ladder.
  • Introducing a change in management – This is not the time either to make it about a change in management, these are not things that should be put together.
  • Sharing bad news – A total team building Perth experience is not the time to tell employees of layoffs or for groups to talk about negative feelings about the workplace.
Why have a team-building event then?

The point of having team building events, in person or online team building, is to give the people who work for you opportunities to learn and talk about new ideas and new skills. To discover how to deal with issues in a safe environment. It is not learning the job or extended training sessions. It is not about lecturing people on one way or things they should do better either. It is just about offering alternatives positively, sometimes inspiring them to make changes at work that can mean stepping out of the box and perhaps being happier in their role.

Think about your expectations and plan

A total team building Perth experience should not be reactionary all the time. With proper planning and thought it should have purpose and planning. Have some expectations and make sure the staff organizing the event know what those are.
