Staying Safe During Trying Times with an Online Bike Fit

These have been rough times, haven’t they? Masks are horrible, but we all have to wear them in order to prevent this sick this from spreading, and to keep ourselves safe at the same time. The limited amount of travel and activities we can pursue has left us all feeling a bit cooped up as well. It’s not so bad as it could’ve been, thanks to the interconnectivity of the Internet, and they endless supply of entertainment it can deliver, as well as a form of social interaction albeit an impersonal one.

As a cyclist, you found ways to cope. You found places where you can safely ride, well removed from other people, such as suburban streets, bike paths and parks, etc. You have yourself regularly checked to make sure that you weren’t somehow still exposed to the illness, and you’re keeping sharp. You’re not letting this stop you from staying fit, nor from pursuing what you love. Very good, you found the balance that so many people seem to be failing to achieve. But what about road bike fitting?

With direct social interaction being understandably discouraged right now, how do you pursue something like road bike fitting, we need to bring the bike in and have a professional look at it, as well as possibly take measurements of yourself? That’s physical contact, something that’s definitely a no-no right now.

Well, the Internet saves the day again! You can get an online bike fit quite easily, and your approach to it simply depends on personal preference. Many large bike retailers and bike services provide this through either an app, or online. Some simply use video chat to have an associate talk you through the appropriate measurements and adjustments. Others are completely virtual, governed only by possibly AI, but usually less than even that. It simply has you take a series of measurements, answer some questions, and discuss the model of bike you have. It will then recommend products you can acquire to properly fit your bike, and give you instructions on how to install them and make any other adjustments you may need to achieve proper road bike fitting.

Some places are offering fitting like this online, but with you dropping off the bike at an actual location to have the adjustments done for you. This is moderately safe, as it usually doesn’t involve any direct human contact, and a bike can easily be sanitized before and after they handle it. However, only do this if you absolutely must, because the less wear out and about, the less rapidly this problem is going to spread, and the sooner it will come to an end.

These platforms have gotten very advanced at a surprising rate due to necessity over the past year. This isn’t new technology, as bike fitting through virtual means has been around for quite a while. It leaned heavily on having a professional on the other end still meeting with you in making the adjustments, before that became unnecessary omission from our lives for the time being. It was never that sophisticated, but the sheer necessity of these apps handling everything, and empowering you to make the adjustments yourself, have led to this system becoming very powerful and very capable.
