Wood Panelling Makes A Great Interior Design Choice

Using wood panelling is a traditional choice for creating an interior that is both attractive and practical. It suits a variety of decor styles and gives a room interest and a more cozy feeling. You can get different types of panelling depending on the wood used and you can also get panelling made from other materials like metals, fabric and wood, PVC and such. As well as being used in homes it also used in businesses and is a great way to hide your wiring. There are also portable panels you can use to create divisions for offices and move around as needed. Sound studios often use special wall panelling to create better acoustics and soundproofing properties. As well as there being a range of wood types there is a range of quality, colors and sized panels to consider.

Types of wood panel surfaces

Wood panels with a veneer finish - Wood panels such as western red cedar panelling with veneers are more expensive but they have a great finish. There are three layers the face, the core and the back. If you want grains you pay more.

Vinyl coated wood panels - You can have different wood designs which are often printed and then laminated into the plywood. The vinyl coating means they are a lot easier to keep clean but scratch easily so care should be taken. Printed paper means a variety of design options are possible.

Surface printed panels - A more affordable choice with wood panels is surface printed wood panels. These are popular for those wanting to take on a DIY project. It is important when looking after this type of panelling that care is taken with the substances used so that the color and finish are not damaged.

Backing type panels - Often made from MDF that is medium density, plywood or hardwood. Choosing the more expensive option tends to mean you get wood that has been treated and can handle moisture better.

Grooves both painted and real - With western red cedar panelling and other types of panels you can have real grooves or painted. The better quality is those with real grooves and you can see that just by looking at them. If the grooves are sharp and straight this reflects higher quality.  Painted grooved panels are more affordable.

Tips when installing wood panelling

Ideally, unless you have the experience you should leave the installation process to an expert. They will get it done to a higher standard and do it more quickly too. The walls need to be levelled and completely dry before installation. Otherwise, the build-up of moisture can cause warping. If you have concrete walls you need to seal them. Even when you are using wood opanelling that is moisture resistant this is still important to do. Choosing wood panels as part of your interior design is a great way to get an attractive room but you will need to look after it to keep it looking its best.
