Ovarian Cysts - Surgical Removal

Many women with ovarian cysts, do not even know that they have them. Most cysts are benign and they occur as part of a normal body function. But some do have symptoms and need to choose with suggestions from their doctor a treatment. Then a small percentage of those will require surgical removal. If the cysts have a diameter larger than 5 cms then this usually means removal is required.

Diagnosis and surgical operation

The first thing that happens of course with your doctor before any treatment is a thorough examination, and possibly the ordering of certain tests. They will also review your medical history, look at the medications you are currently on and look at the results of those tests including blood and urine tests, a CT scan and x-rays. If it is deemed that your cyst is larger than 5cms, or it is an irregular shape or causing a great deal of pain then surgical removal may be suggested.

It is important to understand that going in for surgical removal does not mean you will never get a cyst again. It is also important to remember this is the last resort when it comes to dealing with cysts and there are many others to try before you get here. The older the patient the more likely the doctor is to want to surgically remove it as there are more chances of it becoming cancerous with age.

Most common surgeries

There are two more common surgeries for removing ovarian cysts, open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. Which one is chosen tends to depend on the health and wants of the patient and the condition of the cyst. For particularly large cysts open surgery may be the only option. Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin tube inserted through a small cut made in the lower stomach. Open surgery requires going under general anesthesia and there can be a longer healing process after the surgery is complete.

Recovery time

During the open procedure, if there are no signs of ovarian cancer this lowers the chance of other complications. A week or two after the surgery will be needed to heal. If cancer is found though then it may be you need further surgery and treatment. After surgery during your recovery time make sure you do not have issues such as abdominal swelling, excessive pain or bleeding and also watch for signs of an infection such as vomiting, chills, fever, shortness of breath or anything else that is off. If you do experience them see your doctor straight away. Having ovarian cysts removed surgically takes time to recover from so make sure you can take it easy for a couple of weeks while you heal.

Conclusion

Cysts are something women may experience during their childbearing years, from the start of their period to the start of menopause. Most of the time you do not know you have it, they do not hurt or cause symptoms and they are not something to worry about. But in a few small cases, there are symptoms, and a few women may require surgery to treat them.
