Keep Organised When Moving House

Moving house is a crazy time not just on moving day but many days and even weeks before! There is so much to do and think of. It is easy to forget things, not be ready and packed on the day, or find people who have not contacted. That is why it makes sense to use a change of address checklist. You can write down all the things you can think of, organise it into a timeline that suits you and then tick them off as they are done. In case you are not sure what to put on that list though here is one we have prepared for you. You can just add your own things if it is not complete enough!

Main tasks to carry out when planning the move

  • Find a professional removalist to help with the move to make the process easier
  • Find out when you need to contact utilities to cut them off, phone, electricity and so on
  • Look into a notification service for your new address
  • Make a list of things you want with you or easy to find on move day and for a few days after, make sure you have some cash for things like tipping the removalists, food, drinks
  • Make a backup of your computer so you do not lose files
  • Have your old doctor and dentist send your files to your new doctor and dentist if you are moving far enough away to need to move
  • Have the same for your pet’s new vet if you have one
  • Next on the moving house address change checklist about 6 weeks in advance is to start packing and sorting rooms you do not often use, spare bedroom, dining room, main bathroom if you have your own you use and so on
  • Use this opportunity to de-clutter. There must be things you have not worn in a year or looked at for longer. Sell what you can, give away what you cannot sell and take a few trips to a local tip with the junk
  • Have your car serviced, with any longer journey this keeps you safe
  • Decide what if anything you want to put into storage. Your removalists may offer this for an additional fee
  • Start a list of all your boxes and what is in each one being sure to still label the boxes and to update the list as you pack more boxes
  • Organize someone to look after your children and pets and that they have everything they need, medications, food, toys so they are out of the way
  • Make sure the gas and other utilities are connected at the new property

A week before the big day

  • Plan what is happening for the night before the move
  • Gather spare keys you have in the house and ones you have handed to other people and leave them for the agent or new owners
  • Prepare fittings and fixtures if you are moving them
  • Empty your fridge, eat what you can, give away some, throw it out
  • Let the insurance company and other addresses to change when moving know about the move
  • Clean and defrost the fridge a couple of days before move day
  • Complete last-minute packing

On the day

  • Walkthrough the whole home and check all drawers cupboards and such
  • For rentals, you should clean the home to ensure getting back your deposit, or organize cleaners to come in

Using the change of address checklist will ensure it happens more smoothly and is less stressful without forgetting anything!
