Latte Art - How to make Latte Art Heart
Latter art is a skill many Baristas learn and develop to pour steamed milk into fresh shots of espresso to create designs, patterns and images on the surface of your cup of coffee! It combines a mix of hand movements, frothing techniques and with some, a latte art pen might be used, syrups or sauces, crema, as well as properly microfoamed milk. Microfoam milk has a consistency that makes it possible to pour into different shapes to create the art. However it is not always easy, there are some very complex patterns and images in latte art taking a lot of consistency and skill to achieve. Typical designs you might see are a swan, heart latte art, rosettas and more. Baristas work hard on their passion and flair and get very creative with the process.
Pouring a heart is one of the easier shapes to learn and does not actually take a lot of movement. With some practice and the help of the following heart latte art step by step guide, you will soon master it. Just make sure once your milk is ready that you give the milk pitcher a few strong taps and swirls to remove bubbles and smooth it out.
Step One
Hold the mug in one hand so it is angled slightly towards the pitcher. In your dominant hand hold your pitcher with a controlled grip. Start about 4 inches above the coffee’s surface. Starting the pour higher is how you get the milk to go under the surface of the coffee creating an even color base for the foam to now rest on. You can move your pitcher forward and back in this step to make sure the texture and color are even.
Step Two
Keeping your hand steady fill the cup between a half to three quarters up and then when at that level bring the pitcher spout closer to the surface, almost touching but not quite. To create heart latte art you need to make sure the speed at this point is at medium until the foam is laying on the surface.
Step Three
Now speed is key. Going too slow and the shape will not fill out, but going too fast and you lose control. Keep the pour aimed at the center and keep going and give it a few seconds. Do not give up, the shape will start to show at the front of the spout. The foam will start to create a circular shape on the surface.
Step Four
When the mug is full bring the pitcher up and in one movement strike through the circle or blob developing to create the heart shape. Moving too slow or too fast will cause the shape to get sucked under the coffee’s surface.
Step Five
In this last heart latte art step by step when you have got this process going well and are achieving a basic heart shape, you can start to practice by adding your own touch to the heart.
