What should I look for in a bong shop? Why are bongs better than pipes?
I am going to go out on a limb and bet that if you live in a Western-inspired culture, and yes, I include places like Australia and New Zealand in that group, when you hear the term bong, you probably picture a certain type of counterculture. You almost certainly don’t consider bongs as an optimal tool for enjoying tobacco, but rather certain other dry herbs. Well, if you actually look at how a bong works, there is nothing about it that makes it specifically designed for any particular type of dry plant, and the same reasons that it is preferable for certain other herbal supplements make it quite preferable for tobacco as well.
Let’s talk a little bit first about how these work and why they are healthier than other implementations such as cigarettes, pipes or cigars. A bong is a hollow chamber with an opening at the top, a small regulatory opening shortly lower than that and a diagonal street chamber leading into a reservoir of water inside the main hollow chamber. This means that when you pull smoke from the diagonal chamber, the smoke is pulled through the water. This creates distinct alterations to the smoke, mainly scrubbing the toxic action carcinogens, but also moistening and making it less irritating. The result is something more akin to what vaporizers produce, simply oils that produce the flavor and the desired nicotine, then inhaling harsh, raw smoke.
As such, a large portion of what makes smoking so unhealthy is removed. It is worth noting, though, that there is no such thing as a 100% healthy way to smoke, and nicotine is in and of itself a very addictive substance that is harmful to developing bodies, hence one of the myriad reasons why it should never be given to minors. It is also worth noting that some amount of odor is produced due to the burning tobacco, some amount of secondhand smoke is produced, and the use of these is absolutely going to be prohibited anywhere any other form of smoking is also prohibited.
When searching for a bong shop, don’t just go to the bong shop down the road unless you already have had significantly pleasant experiences with them. Most of these “head shop” type of stores sell inferior glass, unless you see brand names you trust. It is usually from local blowers, and while these glass products are nice-looking, they tend to be fragile and not really great for heavy use. What you want is the bong shop in your area that sells high-quality, well-respected brands manufactured with the latest in science and technology in places like Australia and Europe. These aren’t your typical old-fashioned bongs, these are precision, minimalist and attractive modern devices intended to encourage healthier ways to smoke anything you might like to smoke.
