How Does An Online Bike Fit Work?

I honestly would’ve expected to not have to write about this by this point in 2022, and I bet you thought you wouldn’t still be hearing suggestions like this. Surely, by now, this ridiculous pandemic would have been dealt with, as some level of normalcy could be achieved, although the permanence of obsolescence of brick-and-mortar is still something of merit to discuss. However, it is still not safe, and we probably won’t be completely over this crap for a few more years of for being honest. This however does not mean that people can’t continue to live healthy, fit lives and enjoy nature.

As a matter of fact, aside from gyms, getting out and exercising is still very safe when you avoid crowded areas. Nature is not a place where you are likely to contract something like the current illness, and a healthy lifestyle will make you less of a risk, boosting your immune system and allowing you to more quickly get through the symptoms of Covid should you be unfortunate enough to contracted at any point.

What isn’t safe are crowded small shops, and this is why a virtual bike fit or a general online bike fit is still a much safer solution for the time being compared to something like actually visiting an establishment and having this done.

The problem with this is that it does require you to handle a lot of the work yourself, but that’s probably not a bad idea if you are very serious about a triathlon, or something as simple as road biking. You should know your bicycle in and out, you should actually be able to build one if all of the parts are put in front of you. Only by understanding your machine to this level can you truly master it and be one with it when using it.

That said, most online bike fit or virtual bike fit systems involve some level of basic AI in a series of cascading web forms that ask you questions and then determine what type of bike you have and what needs to be done to best fit it to personal vital information you also provide. In some cases, better shops will actually offer a specialist who talks to you either over a chat window or through voice over IP, perhaps even with video. They will provide you with all the information you need to do modifications and fitting for your bike as well as future maintenance.

The benefits you gain from this are it will be more affordable, you will know your instrument better, and you will be only do this much more safely in the long run. Will this be just the way it’s done in the future? Probably not, with a lot of people preferring to just have experts handle this, not really caring to master it to that level, as they have too much else going on in their lives. However, for the serious bike enthusiasts, I can easily see this being the way to go about it, adding a little bit more of your own soul and pound of flesh to your machine by handling everything yourself with guidance!
