Swim With Contacts Or Invest In Prescription Swimming Goggles?

 A lot of people swim with contacts in and then wonder why they are having issues with irritation and eye infections! The fact is it is not a good idea to swim with contacts, the water is not good for the lenses, and water contamination can cause problems with the lenses and then your eyes. Different bodies of water pose different risks, lakes, rivers seas and other outside bodies of water have a higher risk of contaminated water than a chlorinated swimming pool, but there is a risk even in that pool. Salt in oceans and seas is also a hazard to be avoided. Here is a closer look at why it should be avoided and why you might want to consider investing in hyperopia swimming goggles or ones suited to your specific eye condition.

What are the concerns about contacts when swimming?

The main concerns are;

  1. Microorganism contamination - Contamination of the contact lenses and eyes from the water that still contains microorganisms even after chlorine.
  2. Chlorine contamination - Contamination from the chlorine itself!

In a small study carried out on swimmers, some were asked to wear contacts with goggles, and some wore just their contacts. They also tested two common types of mass-made contact lens materials. After half an hour of swimming the contact lenses were then collected to examine them and see what kind of contamination had happened. It was definitive that those who wore contacts without goggles had lenses there were more affected and had more bacterium. There was no difference between the two contact lens material types however. Therefore if you do choose to still wear contact lenses in the water it is better to wear swim goggles for protection. But a better choice would be to choose custom or prescription swim goggles like cheap myopia swimming goggles since contacts with goggles might lessen the bacteria but it does not prevent it.

Avoiding these problems

The obvious answer if you are having problems with irritation, eye infections and such is to stop wearing contacts when you go swimming or play any kind of water sports. There are plenty of options for hyperopia swimming goggles or you can get the kind of prescription goggles you need. You can once more enjoy being able to see well enough to not bump into people, to identify friends, avoid obstacles, enjoy the scenery and so on. There are goggles you can buy that are already prescription designed up to certain strengths, or you can have your own made to your needs.

Summary

The best option is to get yourself hyperopia or cheap myopia swimming goggles. But if that is not possible right now only swim in contacts that are daily disposables and make sure you dispose of them after the swim, do not keep them in and using them. While eyes are somewhere resistant and have enzymes for defeating bacteria foreign particles and contamination can still cause discomfort and impact your enjoyment of your swim.
